Mumbai, Oct 8 (Calcutta Tube / IBNS): English entertainment channel Zee Café will be launching acclaimed quirky show – Weeds-on Saturday (Oct 8).
The show, to be aired Sat-Sun at 10pm, takes a sarcastic view of how off-color characters struggle with fake suburban reality, in which everything is “all style, no substance”.
The series exposes the dirty little secrets that lie behind the pristine lawns and shiny closed doors of homes in the fictional suburb of Agrestic, California.
Suburban mom Nancy Botwin embraces this new profession as the neighborhood pot dealer and it seems like everyone secretly wants what she’s selling — even city councilman Doug Wilson. Nancy is faced with keeping her family life in check and her enterprise a secret from her neighbor/pseudo-friend/PTA president, Celia Hodes.
This single camera dark comedy explores a widowed mother and her family as they take to selling marijuana to support themselves after her husband unexpectedly dies. When her husband; Judah, dies of a sudden heart attack while out with his ten-year-old son Shane, Nancy Botwin finds herself in a financial crisis.
With no other option available to her, she turns to Conrad Shepard and his family to sell cannabis, using a fake bakery to move the goods.
Aided by her wayward black-sheep brother-in-law, Andy (Judah’s younger brother), she struggles to keep her new means of bill-solving secret from suspicious PTA members and her nosy neighbors as well as from her children, Shane and his teenage brother, Silas.
Coping without Judah as the patriarch of the family reflects in the Botwins, especially Shane, who is going through the painful process of growing up without his dad, with Andy as the reluctant and rather poor substitute for father-and-son topics that go with growing up. During the course of the show, the family progressively gets entangled in a mesh of illegal activities.
The show is inspired by crime series such as The Shield and The Sopranos, in the sense of the antihero serving as the protagonist while retaining their own moral code, which usually goes against the norms of society. The title, according to Jenji Kohan, the show’s creator, refers “to a lot of things”, including marijuana and widow’s weeds; however, it mainly alludes to “hardy plants struggling to survive.”
Weeds is an American television comedy created by Jenji Kohan and produced by Tilted Productions in association with Lionsgate Television. Kohan, whose credits include Tracey Takes On…, Mad About You, Sex and the City and Gilmore Girls, is the executive producer of the series alongside Roberto Benabib, of Little City fame. Matthew Salsberg and Craig Zisk have joined the production team as executive producers in later seasons.
The show has received numerous awards, including two Satellite Awards, one Golden Globe Award, Writers Guild of America Award, Young Artist Award, and an Emmy Award.
