Kolkata, Nov 2, 2010 (Calcutta Tube/IBNS): To boost the awareness on food safety and nutrition, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) partnered a school for underprivileged children here on Monday to sponsor meals for its 200 students over the next 35 days.
[ReviewAZON asin=”1409238482″ display=”inlinepost”]In wake of the World Food Day, which was observed on Oct. 16, the CII’s Young Indians (Yi) is celebrating the World Food Month through nationwide campaigns and awareness drives, a Yi official said.
Yi’s Kolkata wing this year is working on 7,000 meals for the students of Jyotirmai Vidya Mandir, a school near Ballygunge where children come from slums in Topsia and Kidderpore areas.
“For many of the 200 students who come here, the biscuits that they get at around 10 AM, is their first meal of the day,” said Anindita Chowdhuri, principal of the school run by the Jyotirmai Club.
The school also provides for the students lunch and Chowdhuri said it is one of the big draws for the children to attend classes daily.
“Last year, we teamed up with another school in the city and sponsored around 5,000 meals. Countrywide we sponsored around 50,000 meals. This year we have stepped up and want to reach one lakh meals,” said Yi Kolkata Chapter chairman Shaurya Veer Himatsingka.
Tollywood actress June Maliah who was also present to show her support for the initiative said she felt very proud of being part of the drive.
“We have progressed so much in terms of economy and everything, but it’s just sad that there still are so many children who don’t get to have two square meals every day,” she said.
“If each one of us becomes a part of an initiative like this, I think collectively it would go a long way and solve a lot of problems,” she said.
