Kolkata, Feb 13 (Calcutta Tube / IBNS) West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Sunday said the separation of Darjeeling hills from West Bengal is not acceptable.
Questing the silence of opposition Trinamool Congress on the issue, Bhattacharjee told a rally of the Left Front here that Darjeeling would not be allwed to cede.
“We will not let division of Bengal. Trinamool is silent on the issue because of votes. They (Trinamool and Gorkha Jamukti Morcha) are new friends,” he said.
He said violence and arson and destructions of roads are no means to achieve demands in the hills.
The Darjeeling Hills and Dooars are witnessing widespread violence over the demand of a separate Gorkhaland state, with flare ups claiming lives in the past week.
Bhattacharjee also slammed the Trinamool Congress for supporting the Maoists.
“They are providing Oxygen to the Maoists, who are killing our supporters and members,” said Bhattacharjee.
“Trinamool is showing the way to Maoists while we want to drive the rebels away from our state,” said Bhattacharjee.
The Chief Minister urged the Left Front workers to go to people and bow before them and hear their grievances.
“Do not bully people. Go before them with heads bowed,” he told the Left activists.
He said for a few bad people in the party the entire outfit is disgraced often.
Left Front chairman Biman Bose also urged all to go back and prepare for the polls so that the eighth Left Front government could be formed after the crucial 2011 elections.
Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress leader and Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee called the Left Front rally the “farewell meeting” of the communists.
“In Egypt the government had to go after 30 years, here they will go only five years later,” she said ridiculing the Left.
She said the government has requisitioned state buses to ferry people to the meeting.
“The Left only know one ideology and it is of the hired killers (harmad),” she said.
