Kolkata, Aug 8 (CalcuttaTube/IBNS) Violence erupted at Rabindra Bharati University (RBU) campus here on Friday between two student unions after a second-year girl alleged she has been molested by a fellow-student, forcing authorities to shut down the varsity for the day.
According to reports, the girl, a supporter of Trinamul Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), alleged that she has was molested by a Students Federation of India (SFI) activist on Thursday when she went to submit a memorandum on class-related problem.
Clashes broke out on Thursday night itself after a complaint was lodged at Sinthi police station.
The situation was brought under control after police intervened.
However, fresh clashes started Friday morning with TMCP supporters blockading the busy BT Road in front of the university demanding ‘fair probe’ and ‘proper action’ on the molestation case. The blockade was lifted around 12 noon.
Clashes were reported on the RBU campus too where at least two students were injured on Friday.
The varsity authorities were forced to stop all academic activities on the campus for the day.
“We had to suspend student-related activities on the BT Road campus on Friday because of unwarranted incidents on the campus yesterday. The exams and distribution and submission of MA forms have been rescheduled,” university registrar Tapati Mukherjee told reporters.
“We will probe the complaints of the students on Monday though the modalities are yet to be decided,” Mukherjee added.
The SFI is running the RBU union for 23 years.
