Kolkata, January 2, 2011 (Calcutta Tube/IBNS): The warm notes of a musical choir comprising National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets from West Bengal and Sikkim kicked off the cultural programme on the occasion of Vijay Diwas Celebrations 2010 in the Fort William stadium.
A delegation of Mukti Joddhas from Bangladesh, retired Army veterans of 1971 war fame and a host of other luminaries. Lieutenant General Bikram Singh, General Officer Commanding in Chief, Eastern Command was the chief host for the evening.
There were scintillating performances of dance troupes from across the seven states in the east and north eastern India.
Ghantu dance from Sikkim, Chhau from West Bengal, Bihu of Assam, Cheraw dance from Mizoram and Manipuri Thang-ta Dance held the packed stadium spellbound. The grand finale was a musical concert by the Tri-Services Symphony Orchestra which played patriotic songs as well as English and Hindi classics.
Commemorated on Dec 16 every year, Vijay Diwas marks India’s decisive military victory over arch-rival Pakistan achieved in 1971 ending the 9 month-long Bangladesh Liberation War. Rich tributes are paid to the martyrs who laid down their lives for the nation on this day.
