‘Uttaryan’ is a wonderful film of love, hope, and sacrifice directed by the eminent direction group ‘Agradoot’. Uttam Kumar, Supriya Devi, Sabitri Chatterjee, Anil Chatterjee are wonderful in their roles, while the Mahanayak is in a double role. The film is about the relationship of a few people in the war period in India. Their love and trust survives is at stake in the city that is devastated by the war and took toll of so many lives and so much resourses. Everyone tries to live, and their everyday struggle is to come out of the pain and the aftermath of war that has damaged their lives in some way or the other. It is a struggle in every way – they are all trying to defeat their fate, trying to love and trust each other, and above all live. The film may remind us of the Hindi film ‘Hum Dono’ which is another classic cast by Dev Anand, Sadhna, Achla Sachdev.
‘Uttarayan’ has great songs and scenes, and above all a wonderful philosophy in its story. The acting and script are great, too; and some of the dialogues are especially awesome. Uttam Kumar and Supriya Devi looked an attrative couple, and Sabitri’s character was the ultimate definition of holiness, sanctity, and sacrifice. She was splendid, though some of the scenes may look a bit overacted to the modern audience, esp. when we are much used to behavioral acting.
A classic film for all times!
