Union Health and Family Welfare minister condoles at Kolkata hospital tragedy

New Delhi/Kolkata, Dec 9 (Calcutta Tube / IBNS) Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has expressed his heartfelt condolence at the death of victims in the tragic fire at AMRI Hospital, the super speciality private hospital in Kolkata.

In a letter written to Chief Minister and Health Minister of the state, Mamta Banerjee, Azad has offered all possible help and assistance from Government of India.

At least 73 people were killed when a devastating fire engulfed Kolkata’s five star AMRI Hospital at Dhakuria in the city’s southern part in the wee hours of Friday.

The AMRI Hospital authorities confirmed the death of 73 people.

Of them 70 were patients and three were hospital staff, AMRI vice-president S Upadhayay told a press conference, adding that Rs 5 lakh compensation would be paid to each victim’s family.

Earlier, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee confirmed the toll at 61 when she said while 41 bodies were brought to the state-run SSKM Hospital, at least 20 other bodies were lying in the AMRI Hospital where the blaze occurred.
