Tollywood Kolkata Queen Rituparna Sengupta urges to switch off lights

Kolkata, Mar 27 (Calcutta Tube/ IBNS): Actor Rituparna Sengupta has joined hands with environmental organization WWF-India to support Earth Hour 2012.

Rituparn launched the campaign at a press conference in Kolkata on Monday.

Debasis Kumar, Member in Council, Saswati Sen, State Director, WWF India and R. R. S. Kahalon, IAS officer were also present at the event.

Speaking about the campaign, Rituparna said: “This year, Earth Hour calls for cities to collectively participate by switching off lights and fighting against climate change. I urge the citizens of Kolkata to step up and take action for our city.”

“Together, we can make Kolkata the Earth Hour Champion, showcasing the power of individual action behind a common cause. I will switch off for Kolkata, and encourage citizens to do so as well,” she added.

Speaking about the Earth Hour campaign, Saswati said: “This is a symbol which looks like electricity consumption but it’s not like that; through this we want to spread awareness about the environment.”

On Mar 31 the campaigning will be done through a tram ride starting at Curzon Park where Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee will flag off the tram tableaux.

When asked why tram has been chosen, Debasis Kumar said: “Tram is a less polluted vehicle that’s why we have zeroed in on tram for carrying out the message.”

In addition, West Bengal city Chandernagore will also observe Earth Hour led by the Chandernagore Municipal Corporation.

At Chandernagore, Mayor Ram Chakraborty will launch the campaign.

Earth Hour 2012 aims to inspire citizens to take action for cities by switching off lights to make their city the Earth Hour Champion.

Six mega cities – Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bangalore are participating in the race to become the Earth Hour Champion but WWF-India encourages participation from other Indian cities as well.

In Kolkata, The Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Environment Department, EnGio, Spark and Marc Eco Lighting are in full support of this campaign.

This year, Earth Hour will be observed on Mar 31, 2012 from 8.30 – 9.30 pm.
