Bengali Movies by Google on Youtube

Hello All,
I am not sure if it has anything to do with recent deletion of >300 super hit Bengali movies from youtube.com, but I found this article very interesting. The article came out right after the complete deletion of the account “shashit123” from youtube that hosted more than three hundred copyrighted Bengali movies online. I am sure they will be getting more strict about copyright violation every day. What made me happy is the news - GOOGLE IS PLANNING TO HOST BENGALI MOVIES ON YOUTUBE! A report by Indiatimes.com says that a GOOGLE INDIA managing director Shailesh Rao led team already met with our PM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee last Friday to discuss featuring BENGALI MOVIES on youtube by GOOGLE.

So, guys who are still posting Bengali movies, take a break. We will soon hoping to watch full length Bengali Movies from Youtube - Legally!

Enjoy and share this good news to everyone!

Brief Review:

Chattogram Astragar Lunthan is a bengali movies based on our own history during the time of our fight for freedom. The movie nicely uses patriotic songs by Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul. Specially the song “Karar Oi Lauha Kopat” is beautifully sung in this movie. Kalipada Sen relied on the best lyricist for his songs. The movie was filmed at the Bengal National Studio in Barrackpore, like most other bengali movies of that time. A great movie to remember our glorious past during the time of need.

Mother (1985) Sharmila Tagore-Amal Palekar-Classic Bangla Cinema

Mother (1985) Sharmila Tagore-Amal Palekar-Classic Bangla Cinema
Direction: Narayan Chakrabarty
Story: Asutosh Mukherjee (Original Story: Mahabihar)
Music Direction: Bireswar Sarkar
Lyric: Bireswar Sarkar, Pulak Banerjee
Playback Singers: Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey, Asha Bhosle, Meena Mukherjee.
Cast:Sharmila Tagore, Amal Palekar, Dipankar Dey, Arindam, Chhaya Debi, Bipin Gupta, Ajit Banerjee, Mohua Roy Chowdhury, Bijay Lakshmi Barman, Murari Chakrabarty, and more…..

This was the second production of famous “Sarkar Films” in Tollywood Kolkata. Mother is based on the story “Mahabihar” written by Asutosh Mukherjee. Mother is very famous movie and the supreme presense of Amal Palekar made this movie even better. We all know how choosy Amal Palekar is about movies. I can not recall Amal Palekar doing a bad film ever. Mother is one of the very few movies in Bengali that features Amal Palekar. It is a long movie with triangle love story. Hope that you will enjoy watching the movie. The movie is full of great songs by greatest singers in Bengali Film history including Kishore, Manna, Lata, Asha and more.

Note: I am to too sure about the year of release of the film. But it should be pretty close to 85.

Storyline
The story is set in 1977, the aftermath of the Naxal movement in Bengal. Shaon, a former naxalite and now a fugitive abroad, comes back to India after his mothers death and accidentally gets introduced to the daughter of the very man he had assassinated. He finds out about her grinding poverty and that she was forced into prostitution. Yet, there is something fatally attractive about her and he can neither confess to her nor stay away. The story of ‘Robibar Bikalbela’ is the story of the Dilemma of Shaon….

Small Review:
Robibar Bikalbela is a gentle film. Its gentle in its treatment of the main theme, its gentle in its critical look at the human price of political activity and above all its gentle because it does not take ethical positions. Its tells a tale and leaves you to judge for yourself.

Yet it is this gentleness that mires the film in mediocrity. The storyline had immense possibilities. There was human drama, there was the psychological aspect of an assassin returning to the scene of his crime. There was the futility of political action that is implied but never explored. Yet the film does not take an in-depth look at any of this. It focuses on the dilemma of the hero, but even here thetreatment is somewhat superficial.

Then there is a distressing lack of concern for detail. It is not the Calcutta of 1977 that we see here. its the Kolkata of the 1990’s. The street signs, the posters, the dresses are all wrong. It takes away much of the charm of an otherwise enjoyable movie.

If anything lifts the film it is the acting of Sudipta Chakrabarty as the young daughter of Shaon’s victim who is also a sex-worker. She portrays every emotion brilliantly. It is understated action - each idea is conveyed by a glance or a smile or a gesture and is done with such naturalness that one can’t help empathise withthe character. Sudipta portrays the cynicism of the sex worker beautifully, but equally projects the vulnerability and the emotional response of the young woman. Bhaswar Chatterjee as Shaon is nowhere as believable.

The film has some beautiful pieces of music. i particularly liked the rendering of Ave Maria by Robin Alicatore. Cinematography by Siumitra Haldar is outstanding.
But to sum it up, at the end of the film, you are left with a sense of lingering sadness at the futility of it all. You wonder why so many lives were wasted and what came of it. That perhaps is the director’s greatest achievement.

Overall its a film worth watching.
