Storyline
The story is set in 1977, the aftermath of the Naxal movement in Bengal. Shaon, a former naxalite and now a fugitive abroad, comes back to India after his mothers death and accidentally gets introduced to the daughter of the very man he had assassinated. He finds out about her grinding poverty and that she was forced into prostitution. Yet, there is something fatally attractive about her and he can neither confess to her nor stay away. The story of ‘Robibar Bikalbela’ is the story of the Dilemma of Shaon….

Small Review:
Robibar Bikalbela is a gentle film. Its gentle in its treatment of the main theme, its gentle in its critical look at the human price of political activity and above all its gentle because it does not take ethical positions. Its tells a tale and leaves you to judge for yourself.

Yet it is this gentleness that mires the film in mediocrity. The storyline had immense possibilities. There was human drama, there was the psychological aspect of an assassin returning to the scene of his crime. There was the futility of political action that is implied but never explored. Yet the film does not take an in-depth look at any of this. It focuses on the dilemma of the hero, but even here thetreatment is somewhat superficial.

Then there is a distressing lack of concern for detail. It is not the Calcutta of 1977 that we see here. its the Kolkata of the 1990’s. The street signs, the posters, the dresses are all wrong. It takes away much of the charm of an otherwise enjoyable movie.

If anything lifts the film it is the acting of Sudipta Chakrabarty as the young daughter of Shaon’s victim who is also a sex-worker. She portrays every emotion brilliantly. It is understated action - each idea is conveyed by a glance or a smile or a gesture and is done with such naturalness that one can’t help empathise withthe character. Sudipta portrays the cynicism of the sex worker beautifully, but equally projects the vulnerability and the emotional response of the young woman. Bhaswar Chatterjee as Shaon is nowhere as believable.

The film has some beautiful pieces of music. i particularly liked the rendering of Ave Maria by Robin Alicatore. Cinematography by Siumitra Haldar is outstanding.
But to sum it up, at the end of the film, you are left with a sense of lingering sadness at the futility of it all. You wonder why so many lives were wasted and what came of it. That perhaps is the director’s greatest achievement.

Overall its a film worth watching.

Race (2008) Bollywood Movie Review!

Race (2008) Bollywood Movie Review!
Directed by: Abbas Mastan
Casts: Saif Ali Khan, Akshay Khanna, Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif, Anil Kapoor, Sameera Reddy….

I know it is little late to review Race as it has been out for some time now and probably most of you have already watched the film! however there might be some just like me! I watched it last night only. Well I thought I write a small review for fun.

Pros:

  • Another suspense drama
  • Saif looked very matured
  • Katrina Kaif is simply too cute.
  • Bipasha is hot al always.
  • Akshay Khanna is as usual!
Cons:
  • Too complicated story.
  • Too much turns in the movie.
  • Anil Kapoor could have made the role more serius. He tried to to do “Karamchand” style comedy. Took time and did not impress anybody,

To start with, Race is a kind of murder mystery. Saif was supposed to be dead in this film. However like most of the Bollywood films, he survived. “Abbas Mastan” Duo produced too many suspense thrillers! Remember “Khiladi”, “Baazigar”, “36 China Town”? Well they are some of the very very successful suspense thrillers in Bollywood directed by “Abbas-Mastan”. So, Race evoked high expectations. It’s not too bad to watch just once!

Storyline:

Race storyline is too complicated to write in words, or I have to narrate the whole movie for you. Saif Ali Khan and Akshy Khanna are “Souteli” brothers. From chieldhood time Saif managed to win all races beween him and his brother starting from a bi-cycle race. When their dad died he gave everything to Saif. However Saif loves his brother a lot and always fulfilled all of his wishes. But Akshay Khanna wanted to win the race of Life. He wanted to kill his brother to get 100 million from insurence. So, the plot begins with a track accident, however Saif survived the accident. Saif came to know about the henious plans of his brother and started his own game.  Bipasha Basu as ravelling as usual but I still do not understand the concenpt of marrying Akshay Khanna and having “Suhag raat” with with Saif Ali Khan and then at the end Saif and Bipasha are lovers again! Jhonny Liver played a small role after a long time in this movie and looked good. He is ready to come back again. Katrina danced well and looked too cute however I still do not understand her role in this movie very much.

The part I hate is Anil Kapoor’s role in this movie. He could have got a more serious police office role. Comedy is the trend of Bollywood today and the director wanted to present us with some comedy  by Anil Kapoor’s role. It was disgusting and sometimes irretating and irrelevent. There are too many turns in the move that will keep puzzling you all the time and you will ponder over who is the real villain and who is hero in the film! Music is OKIE in this movie.
