‘Steps taken to protect Indian students in Australia’

Kolkata, Nov 9 (IANS) Australia has taken the necessary steps and measures to provide a proper atmosphere for Indian students there, an Australian Trade Commission official said Tuesday in the

backdrop of recent attacks on Indian students Down Under.

The commission is planning educational roadshows across major cities in India to showcase Australian education and attract Indian students.

‘We are planning educational roadshows in 12 cities of India in late January next year. They will showcase the Australian educational system,’ Peter Linford, senior trade commissioner-South Asia, Australian Trade Commission, told reporters here.

‘We have taken necessary steps and measures. We take action when we see issues. We promote Australia as a positive place to study,’ said Linford, when asked what steps were being taken to provide a proper atmosphere for Indian students in Australia.

When asked about the sectors in which Australia would like to invest in India, Linford said: ‘We see opportunities in food, beverages, mining resources, energy, buildings, construction, infrastructure and the service sector which includes education, entertainment and sports.’

Australia is participating as partner country in the 10th International Mining and Machinery Exhibition 2010 in Kolkata from Nov 10-Nov 13.
