February 23, 2010 (Calcutta Tube): Indian Pop singer Sona Mahapatra sang 3 songs at the grand finale of V-Care Indian Super Queen– a beauty pageant for eunuchs. Sona began with a ‘Tere Ishq Nachaya’, verses by the legendary 18th century Sufi poet Bulle Shah from ‘Sona by Sona Mohapatra’. The marvelous performance was followed by yet another mind-blowing song ‘Aaja Ve’ from the same album sung by her. And last but not the least; she paid a tribute to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan by singing ‘Piya Re’.
Sona has joined the bandwagon to support the community of eunuchs thereby following in the footsteps of celebrities Zeenat Aman and Celina Jaitley.
The grand finale was conducted on February 21 where 15 eunuchs selected out of 40 semi-finalists across the country walked the ramp and showcased their intelligence and talent.
Sona seemed too thrilled and says, “As far as ‘Indian Super Queen’ is concerned, I must appreciate the initiative taken by Laxmi Narayan Tripathi. This will definitely make a difference in some way in the lives of Hijra community.”
“I feel extremely honored to be invited here… I’m overwhelmed to get the kind of response I’ve got here for my singing,” she signs off. Also present at the event were yesteryear bombshell Zeenat Aman and gorgeous Celina Jaitley.
