Kolkata, Apr 5 (Calcutta Tube / IBNS): Kolkata’s Soham Chowdhury won the quiz contest titled ‘HDFC Life Spelling Bee-India Spells 2011‘ that qualified him to participate in the grand finale of the competition, be staged in Mumbai.
The contest is the Indian edition of the ‘Scripps National Spelling Bee, USA’ contest.
Soham Chowdhury, a student of Kolkata’s Don Bosco School, Park Circus, defeated students from 60 schools in the Kolkata edition of the event to lift the winner’s certificate and hamper from organizer HDFC Life on Thursday.
“The English language has over the years been woven with much prominence into India’s fabric. HDFC Life Spell Bee aims at strengthening the basics of the language among Indian students a and gives a fillip to their proficiency in English,” Prashant Pandey, Chief Executive Officer of, said.
“HDFC life has partnered the event for the third consecutive year, which gives us great joy,” he said.
“The enthusiasm clearly signifies the craving among the young minds for improving their English spelling skills, vocabulary and pronunciations, the first two seasons of HDFC Life Spell Bee received phenomenal response and has generated lots of interest to participate and new internal initiatives in school,” Sanjay Tripathy, EVP and Head, Marketing and Direct Channels HDFC Life said.
The winners of each of the participating cities will participate in the Grand Finale in Mumbai and the winner of it, along with his parents, will visit Washington DC to watch the Scripps National Spelling Bee contest.
