New York, Oct 8 (DPA) US stocks on Wall Street closed slightly lower Thursday on the eve of a government report on unemployment for the month of September.
The US department of labour is due to release its unemployment rate for last month. The report for August put the jobless rate at 9.6 percent – the first increase in months.
The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 19.07 points, or 0.17 percent, to 10,948.58. The broader Standard and Poor’s 500 Index slipped 1.91 points, or 0.16 percent, to 1,158.06. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index was off 3.01 points, or 0.13 percent, to 2,383.67.
On currency markets, the US dollar held steady against the euro at 71.83 euro cents. The dollar fell against the Japanese currency to 82.42 yen from 82.94 yen on Wednesday.
