Six arrested in Noida for honour killing

Noida, July 19 (Calcutta Tube) Six people, including the parents of a girl, were arrested for murdering her as they could not ‘bear to see her live’ with a lower caste man she had married, police said Monday.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) A.K. Singh said Sanjeeta, 23, who worked at an IT firm had married her colleague, Ravinder, who was from the Scheduled Caste community. She had gone missing July 11 and Ravinder lodged a complaint, suspecting she had been killed by her family members.

On investigations, police found that Sanjeeta’s father Bir Singh took her to their native village Barmadpur in Bulandshahr where he killed her and burnt her body. After his confession, police arrested five others including her mother and other relatives.

Sanjeeta’s father said it was not bearable for them to see the couple continuing their relation as husband and wife since the boy was from a lower caste. There was no way left for them except to kill one of them and to eliminate the girl was the easiest way, the SSP cited from their confession.

Ravinder said he had married Sanjeeta Feb 15 at an Arya Samaj temple in Delhi but she only revealed it to her parents in April when they started searching for a match for her. ‘On July 11, I went to her house and revealed the facts to her parents and requested them to send Sanjeeta with me but they asked me to come on July 18,’ he said, adding it was the same day, they took her to their native village and killed her.
