September 30, 2010, Kolkata (Calcutta Tube): Film critic Shoma A. Chatterji has won the “The Excellence in Film Studies and Reporting Award for the year 2010” from the the Kalyan Kumar Mitra Education & Research Society.
The prestigious award ceremony was celebrated with the panel discussion on “Right To Education – The Indian Experience” at Rotary Sadan on Thursday, 23rd of September 2010 attended by industrialists, corporates, professionals and students from post graduate courses.
The Kalyan Kumar Mitra Education & Research Society is a registered body formed in the memory of Late CA Kalyan Kumar Mitra , Chartered Accountant by profession and erstwhile fraternity of renowned firm Pricewaterhouse Coopers Pvt. Ltd., with whom he was associated for more than thirty five years, and a benevolent social worker in his own right. He was associated with numerous social and welfare organizations during his lifetime, and served as Founder Trustee/ Trustee of Swayambhar (An NGO run by orphans), Calcutta Club Provident Fund & Gratuity Fund, Pricewaterhouse Officers & Staff Provident Fund & Gratuity Fund, Rabindra Niketan (Old Age Home), Shanta Basu Memorial Trust (under the Chairmanship of Chief Minister Sri Buddhadeb Bhattacharya) to name a few. Besides, he served as internal auditor of Biswa Banga Sammelan (under the patronage of Sri Jyoti Basu, former Chief Minister of West Bengal and chairmanship of Sri Somnath Chatterjee, former Speaker of Lok Sabha). He was also a member of the governing body of Vivekananda Janmotsav Samiti and Treasurer of Scottish Church College Former Student’s Association until his demise.
The Society has been incorporated with the basic objective of providing encouragement and support for promotion of education amongst the downtrodden and economically backward society especially for propagation of education amongst the girl children in the rural areas and districts of West Bengal where education for the girl child is a myth even after so many years of independence.
