Kolkata, Feb 7 (Calcutta tube / IBNS): Actress Rituparna Sengupta here on Monday inaugurated an inter-school contest based on the celebrations of the Indian festival Saraswati Puja.
She unveiled a specially-crafted trophy for the competition, called ‘Saraswati Vandana’, organised by biscuit and confectionery company Parle in West Bengal.
Falling on the 5th day of the bright fortnight of the lunar month of Magha, usually in January-February, Saraswati Puja is celebrated in eastern India with great fervour in temples, homes and educational institutes alike.
Started in 2002, the competition aims to give children an opportunity to exhibit their creative skills and make the celebrations even more special in the process, the company said.
Every year a programme is organised by Parle in Kolkata to felicitate the winners, that sees the presence of eminent personalities from the field of literature, education, art, films, media and politics.
Parle Group Product Manager B. Krishna Rao said, “Through Parle Saraswati Vandana we are trying to connect with the children of West Bengal. This is also a way of reviving the dying culture of Saraswati Puja, which has become a Bengali Valentine’s Day for the young generation.”
Actress Rituparna Sengupta said, “Saraswati puja is a very special occasion for the bengalis. I feel nostalgic in this particular day.”
