New Delhi, July 2 (IANS) Rice cultivation has picked up in the country with the onset of monsoon, the government said Friday.
Latest data show that rice has been sown in 46.46 lakh hectares till Friday.
This is about one lakh hectare more than the area under cultivation July 2 last year due to increasing rainfall and sufficient water in the reservoirs across the country than 2009, the agriculture ministry said.
Rice was sown only in 45.43 lakh hectares at the corresponding period last year.
Last year rice production was hit by an erratic and deficient monsoon.
The ministry said there has been a remarkable improvement in the cultivation of sugarcane, jute and cotton. However, the cultivation of pulses is yet to pick up.
The data show oilseeds have been sown in 28.86 lakh hectares till July 2. It was sown only in 12.96 hectares in the same period last year.
