Rajkumar Tiwary, the producer of the upcoming Bengali movie ‘Rajdrohi‘ talks about scope of experimentation in Bengali movies, risks in producing films and much more. Please read the interview exclusive at CalcuttaTube.
Calcutta Tube: How did you think of coming into film production?
Rajkumar Tiwary: Some time back when I was working in a music album, I came across director Tapan Banerjee. When he told me about the film (Rajdrohi) he wanted to make, I liked the story. So, I took this new venture. The story had a new concept and I liked the ‘invisible’ element associated with the story. It will be a new addition to the history of Bengali cinema. That is why I came forward to produce the movie.
Calcutta Tube: The making of ‘Rajdrohi’ is complete and is to release soon. What did you think about the movie when you watched it? How did you like it?
Rajkumar Tiwary: I liked the movie very much. The graphics by designer Debjit Das is particularly wonderful and the overall movie is very enjoyable, too.
Calcutta Tube: What is your expectation from the audience?
Rajkumar Tiwary: I think the audience will love this movie, because they will get to see something very new on the screen. We needed something new in Bengali movies.
Calcutta Tube: What is the best thing you liked about the film?
Rajkumar Tiwary: The things revolving around an invisible man were especially interesting.
Calcutta Tube: ‘Rajdrohi’ has a science fiction element and is going to introduce new things in the Bengali cinema. Where do you think this will lead us to in future?
Rajkumar Tiwary: We have not had many experimentations in the Bengali cinema like this. So, I think this will be a very good move. This will definitely inspire others to come forward and make more technologically sound movies and bring in more new ideas. We should all try to make something new and unique. There are definitely risks involved in film-making. But we should at least try.
Calcutta Tube: What are your future plans?
Rajkumar Tiwary: I am going to work in new projects and keep on trying new things that have never been done before in the Bengali cinema.
Calcutta Tube: So, you would again invest in experimental films like this in the future…
Rajkumar Tiwary: Sure, why not.
Calcutta Tube: How much is the risk factor when you are trying new things. Filmmakers and producers often hesitate to try new things because of the risk.
Rajkumar Tiwary: There are many risks associated with film making. So we often see filmmakers and producers coming with up remakes of superhit South Indian films. But I took the risk because I wanted to see the Bengali cinema in a better position. ‘Rajdrohi’ may inspire others to make better Bengali movies.
Calcutta Tube: Do you watch Bengali movies?
Rajkumar Tiwary: I do, though not too often. But when I see a movie is appreciated by the audience, I always watch it.
Calcutta Tube: What kind of movies do you personally like to watch?
Rajkumar Tiwary: I always enjoy movies that are innovative and have never been shown on screen before. I also like movies that are challenging and realistic.
Calcutta Tube: Is there something you like to say for the audience?
Rajkumar Tiwary: I would request them to come and watch ‘Rajdrohi’. It is a very enjoyable and exciting movie. The technologies used to make things visible and invisible is really great.
