Public Enemies 2009 Movie- Exclusive Review by CalcuttaTube team from USA

A story about the most notorious criminal of the great depression period, and perhaps one of the deadly ones of all times . He is an enemy of the people who is trying to be a public hero.

The film ‘Public Enemies‘ by Micheal Mann is based on the Bryan Burrough’s non-fiction ‘Public Enemies: Amerca’s Greatest CrimeWave and Birth Of The FBI 1933-34‘. In the setting of the great depression ‘Public Enemies’ is an action movie where the FBI agent Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale) attempts to catch the criminal gang of John Dillinger (Johnny Depp), Pretty Boy Floyd (Channing Tatum), Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham), Alvin Capris (Giovanni Ribisi), John Red Hamilton (Jason Clarke) and their accomplices. All of them whom are much known for their notorious nature and have big criminal records. And their connection with John Billinger made him so much untouchable. All of the gang members are so perfect at breaking laws and doing the most horrible things under the sun.

The film starts with John Dillinger being brought in an prison by a prisoner drop, who is no other than his accomplice John Red Hamilton. Their entrance to the prison is to set their other gang members free. After a gunfight, they come of the prison and go to Chicago to meet the others and rob more banks. Later in a party, John finds Billie Frechette (Marion Cottilard) and they gradually fall in love. And she starts getting into a bohemian life like the others travelling from one place to another with her identities concealed.

Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale) with other FBI associates is promoted and assigned with capturing John Dillinger after his success in catching Pretty Boy Floyd. Purvis is a totally dedicated FBI agent who would not rest for a moment before he catches Dillinger. And now starts a close hunt for Dillinger. They keep cautious eyes in certain apartments of Chicgo, but none of their chases ends up without bloodshed. Dillinger and his gang are almost untouchable. The FBI catches Dillinger in a motel room with Billie, and is sent to prison But he is to be kept in safe custody till the trial is over. And this is exactly what he has wanted his lawyer to do. As always, Billy’s uses this time to break the prison with the other prisoners. They drive away right in front of the eyes of the jailers and the FBI guards with John Billinger humming. But Dillinger’s crimes motivate the US departments of law and justice to prosecute for interstate crime. That gives Frank Nikki enough prerogative to stay away from helping Billinger any more.

Billinger next robs a bank with Baby Face Nelson, who shoots a cop and is injured in the following firings. The others flee leaving one injured and subsequently caught by the cops. A bullet has hit John’s arms and they all go to a hideout in lodge in the woods. Purvis with his men chase the gang in the woods, with the information he has got out of the injured man at the hospital, in haste. They start firing three innocent people in a car, and the firings make Dillinger aware of their presence. In this ambush, Purvis kills Nelson and the rest and Red gets injured from a gunshot and dies later.

Dillinger, left alone, now meets Billie without the knowledge of the police. Before they try to escape, Billinger drops her in a motel so stay till he is ready to go. But she is captured right the moment Billginer drops her off, and he could not help except watch helplessly. Billie is horribly torchured when in custody, till one of the officers protest and Purvis comes and saves her. She mockingly told her beater that she lied about going to the motel in a cab, and he believed her and lost his opportunity to catch Billinger who was waiting right outside.

From prison, she sends message to Billinger not to contact her till she comes out of prison, and then they can start a new life. But Purvis now uses Anna Sage, a woman not highly reputed for her association with the bad people, threatening her to deport to Romania as soon as he can if she does not reveal Billinger’s secret. She takes a while bargaining with Purvis but gives up at the end. She leads Purvis and his people to the movie theatre where John Dillinger has gone to watch Clarke Gable starrer ‘Manhattan Melidrama’. As soon as the film ends, Purvis signals his collegues lighting his match, and they all set off stalking Billinger. This time they have to be flawlwss, and they are. The men shot down Billinger after several firings. John mutters something when just before he dies.

In the prison, Winstead, one of the gunmen who shot Billinger, comes to meet Billie. This time he has not come to interrogate her about anything, He is there to convey her boyfriend’s parting words – bye bye blackbird.

The films ends here with the notes that Melvin Purivis took his own life in 1960 and Billie got out of prison in 1936 and lived the rest of her life in Wisconsin.

  • The direction is good, but the long and continual firings and gunshots make parts of the film monotonous.
  • The film has a huge and a great cast, and everyone is good.
  • Johhny Deep is very negative as John Billinger with his scornful gaze, screening vision and cold smile.
  • Christian Bale as Melvin Purvis is simply brilliant.
  • Marion Cotillard as Billie Frechette is sweet and exceptionally pretty.
  • The sets picturing the early-mid 20th century are great, and that goes too with the costumes of the casts.
  • The film also has good detailed works on the backdrops of the films, and the soci-economic pictures depicting the times of the great depressions.
