Kolkata, Oct 30, 2010 (Calcutta Tube/IBNS) A major fire destroyed research works and documents at the Chemistry Department of Presidency University on Friday.
Twelve fire engines have been pressed to douse the leaping flames engulfing a part of Baker Building housing the chemistry department of the century-old institution, firefighters said.
There has been no casualty in the incident.
The fire was first noticed around 4.10 a.m as smokes bellowed out of Derozio Bhavan.
Acting Principal Amitava Chattopadhyay said the fire broke out in the third floor of Baker Building where chemicals and gas cylinders were stored.
Preliminary reports suggested electrical short circuit being the cause of the fire which also destroyed many computers.
Forensic officials rushed to the spot to ascertain the exact reason.
