Kolkata, Nov 21, 2010 (Calcutta Tube/IBNS): The Indian Chamber of Commerce and National Disaster Management Authority organized a national conference on corporate interventions in disaster management, ‘Planning for a Safe Nation’, here on Thursday.
The seminar aimed at bringing together important governmental bodies, industries and individuals from various disciplines for sharing and coming up with ways and means to create awareness, dissemination of information and to mitigate the occurrence of disasters.
The corporate members of the Indian Chamber also joined the cause of Disaster Management.
They extended support in the areas like generating awareness and building capacity for Disaster Management.
The significant corporate house that participated in the event are Ambuja Cements Ltd., Electrosteel Castings Limited,Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd., ITC Limited, MCCPTA India Corp Pvt Ltd. and Simplex Infrastructures Limited.
ITC has proposed to spread general awareness on disaster management for the community, especially through print/electronic media.
Electrosteel Castings Ltd. said it would arrange for safety and environment awareness programmes in schools, while Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd. has agreed to carry out safety awareness training for school children and defensive training for carrying hazardous goods.
On the other hand, Ambuja Cements said it would support agro-based livelihoods and promote education, while MCCPTA would conduct awareness workshops on emergency management with respect to safe evacuation especially for the local community.
Rajiv Mundhra, VP, ICC, Shri Amit Jha, Joint Secretary,National Disaster Management Authority and Shri Indevar Pandey, Secretary, Department of Disaster Management, Government of West Bengal were present at the event.
