Over 500 Congress workers arrested in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow, Feb 22 (Calcutta Tube) Over 500 Congress workers were arrested across Uttar Pradesh Monday as they clashed with police during a state-wide protest against last week’s baton charge on Congress women activists here, the party said said.

Police caned several women Feb 16 during a demonstration after a 16-year-old girl committed suicide after being raped in Kanpur.

Hundreds of Congress workers Monday took to the streets demanding action against the policemen who attacked the protesting women activists near the state assembly.

Shouting anti-government and anti-police slogans, the Congress workers also clashed with police in various places including Lucknow, Etawah, Faizabad and Bahraich.

‘Over 500 of our workers were demonstrating peacefully… But on the directives of the chief minister, all of them have been jailed,’ Congress spokesman Subodh Srivastava told reporters here.

‘Several of our party workers, including women activists, were today also assaulted by the police. We will continue to unmask the real face of Mayawati government,’ he added.
