Kolkata, Mar 17 (Calcutta Tube / IBNS): The Election Commission (EC) on Thursday suggested R K Pachnanda as the new Kolkata Police Commissioner after it asked the state government to replace the incumbent top cop, whose tenure has exceeded three years.
Pachnanda was selected from a list of three names provided by the West Bengal government after it was directed to replace city’s Commissioner of Police Gautam Mohan Chakraborty in an unprecedented intervention by the EC.
The constitutional authority had sent the instruction to Chief Electoral Officer Sunil Gupta for replacing Chakraborty on Tuesday, asking for names of three Indian Police Service (IPS) officers who could fill in.
“The Election Commission has considered the three-member panel of IPS officers sent to it by the state government on direction and selected the name of R K Pachnanda as the city police Commissioner,” N K Sahana additional chief electoral officer said here on Thursday.
EC’s choice was forwarded to the state chief secretary Samar Ghosh and an official announcement from the state government is now expected, Sahana said.
The decision to intervene is a first-of-its kind, media reports said.
The EC had earlier issued a general order that all police officers from the rank of sub-inspector up to inspector general who have served over three years in the same post or in their home district should be transferred before the April-May assembly elections.
Despite Chakraborty not falling within those codes, the order to transfer him has raised questions. When asked for reason behind the EC’s directive, N K Sahana said that the poll body had not clarified the reason and he wouldn’t be able to comment.
