Uttam Kumar played the role of a post-master who is located in a “middle of no where” rail way station. He was happy with his lonely life and his only servant Jahar who takes care of his household works. His life suddenly becomes full of events after a stormy night.

Anjana Bhowmik is portraying the role of a well known actress who is bored with her busy schedule. She is going somewhere with other crew members on a train. The train stops at a not-assigned station and she gets down to get some water. The train leaves her behind and left. She starts looking for a shelter and after asking few people the heads down towards the apartment of the station master. She hears some voice of a man in romantic tone, as if he is talking to his wife. She gains some courage feeling she will have some company of another lady in the household. She knocks the door.

The station master (Uttam Kumar) answers the door and sees a beautiful lady completely drenched in rain. He welcomes her at his small home with couple of small rooms and a bed. Anjana Bhowmik asks him for some food, but he finds that there is nothing to serve in the kitchen. Anjan Bhowmik later asks about his wife. Uttam Kumar answers that he is not married and explains that the voices that she heard was only a poem that he was reading loudly.

Anjana Bhowmik, being an unmarried lady, fumbles to spend the night with another bachelor man. However she could not find any other shelter in the middle of the night and decides to stay. For some reason Anjana Bhowmik hides her true identity, a heroine, from Uttam Kumar completely.

The real problem begins next morning when the housekeeper Jahar Ganguly comes to do his routine work in the morning. Anjan Bhowmik hears the knocks on the door and opens it for Jahar. Undoubtly, Jahar Ganguly considers Anjana Bhowmik to be the wife of Uttam Kumar and leave instantly to announce the news to local community without any further delay. When Utta Kumar returns home during lunch, he comes to know about the terrible confusion. However, it is already too late to fix the problem. The neighbor and well wisher Pahadi Sanyal comes to visit Uttam Kumar with his wife. Neither Anjana Bhowmik nor Uttam Kumar could find a way to explain the last night incident properly. So, both remains silent and let them think to be married couple.

Days progress with lots of searching from the movie director for Anjana Bhowmik. But Anjana Bhownik seems to enjoy her stay with Uttam Kumar. They sing some beautiful songs, spend time together and fall in love without knowing.

However, luck is not always as beautiful as Anjana Bhowmik for Uttam Kumar. The other day he, as a station master, is notified about the missing heroine and realizes that Anjana Bhowmik no one but the person everybody is looking for. Uttam Kumar reports to the film director immediately.

Anjana Bhowmik realizes the situation when the movie director knocks the door to take her back home. He leaves the house silently.

At the end of the movie, we see lonely Uttam Kumar standing and looking at the train leaving out of the station. He turns back and then turns back towards the train again and finds Anjan Bhowmik standing there for him.

    1. The best Indian Bangla film ever I have enjoyed. I liked the plot, internal decoration, dialogues, shooting angles and modes and over everything and above, the acting of Anjana- marvelous. In my perception, she did the best acting in her life in this film.

Uttam was a bit faint in this film.

  1. Uttam and Anjann too good. fabulous comedy humor. uttam is versatile in all roles. he is absolutely natural. And anjan playing opposite to her was equally captiviting.. Its worth seeing many a time.. i have seen this film several times and yet i watch enjoying every time, with ease and laughter.

  2. I absolutely agree with you Dr. Abdul Hye. Uttam Kumar is indeed in full form in this movie. Also, I think this is the BEST movie by Anjan Bhowmik. I can not recall any other movie where she is so natural and versatile.

  3. The like and combination of uttam-suchitra in bangla screen is unthinkable. yet we cannot forget roles of anjana, madhobi, supria, sabita with uttam is dream like. Uttam has that masterly, unique in depth quality to paly any role with any heroines with supreme easy. lets alute this legend once agin. he will remain as an idol, as an evergreen icon in the hearts of millions, until eternity. Anjana in ‘naika snagbad’ was perhaps at her best, i have no ide where she is now and hope my best wishes would reach her through this mail.

  4. Well.. Uttam Kumar also had numerous flop and useless films too. But his Charisma was so prominent that he overpowered every shortcomings. I think the most unfit actress opposite to Uttam Kumar was Mala Sinha. Most of Uttam Kumar – Mala Sinha Films are worthless.

I am not sure where she is today either. May be I should try to find that out.

  5. Despite certain roles, charcterization in some films, Uttam hadslight shortcomings. he was however, one of a sort, one of a kind, one of a class. he had an unique appeal, his looks and profile, his voice, his delivery and throw of words.he could easily could prevail upon any role and potray the character with flawless magic. he could make a niche in the heart of the auidence by his towering personality, potentially manly, and by his debonair looks could craete a win-win sitaution of the plot and the story as it unfolded. His romantic pair with suychitra is an all time superb, perhaps no romantic pair in bengali screen can ever come close to them. he will remain an icon in the bengali screen for an indefinte time.

  6. Dear Dr. Abdul Hye,
I agree with you 100%. However I sometimes feel bad about some other very intelligent and brilliant actors of his time like Anil Chatterjee, Subhendu Chatterjee and to some extent Soumitra Chatterjee too. The craze about Uttam Kumar was so enormous, that sometimes we failed to pay proper credit to the other actors of his time.

Sure he was the best and he will remain to be the Best hero Bengali film industry ever seen. He is equally popular even today as he was before. He never died. He is living with each and every Bengali movie lovers.

  7. Nayika Sangbad is one of the best movies i have seen in my life, and probably one of the best in the bengali film industry in its golden era. Uttam kumar as always is seen in his effortless yet beautiful way of presenting himself in front of the camera, and Anjana bhowmick has never been better. Such natural acting relates itself so close to our real lives, that there remains very less difference between the ‘reel’ and ‘real’. This is one movie which promises to entertain all ages, be it the young or the old.
