Kolkata , Feb 28 (Calcutta Tube / IBNS) Akash Wagh of Maharashtra caused a ripple when he beat top seed Vijay Sundar Prasnath from Tamil Nadu in straight sets 7-6 ( 7-5) and 6-4 at the first round of the men’s singles in the Jute Board National Grass Court Tennis Championships at Calcutta South Club court here Monday.
In the first set Akash Wagh broke Prashanth in the seventh game but Prashanth broke back in the eighth. Akash took the set in tie break 7-5. In the second set Akash broke Prashanth in the first game and thereafter the set went with serves. Akash took the second set 6-4.
In another upset of the day, Delhi’s Shantanu Rajput defeated the eighth seed Ronak Manuja of Maharashtra 7-6(7-3), 6-0.
Saurav Sukul of Bengal also made it to the Pre Quarter Finals beating Himanshu Mali of Maharashtra 6-1, 6-4 while his caompatriot Vinod Kumar Sewa defeated Farid Alam (WC) 4-6,6-3,6-2.
In Women’s Singles Wild Card Amrita Mukherjee of Bengal also booked her place in the Pre Quarter Finals defeating qualifier Vaibhavi Trivedi of Gujarat 6-3, 6-0.
