Mrinal Sen Retrospective in Cannes Cancelled
Mrinal Sen is one of the most prominent film-maker of present age. He had to cancel the “Mrinal Sen Retrospective in Cannes” this year due to the bad prints of some of the films he made earlier. The retrospective was designated to feature Bengali Movies – “Calcutta Trilogy”, “Calcutta 71”, “Interview” and “Padatik”. It is unfortunate that neither the producers like Film Finance Corporation (now NFDC) nor the Government of West Bengal has taken any action to save the all time great Bengali Movies. The prints of the Bengali films made in Silent Era are mostly gone. Even very few prints are available for earlier talkies by Pramathesh Barua, Durgadas Banerjee etc. Even some of the earlier Uttam Kumar movies are in a very pathetic condition. The future generation of Bengali Audience may not even get a chance to watch some of the greatest films made by Satyajit Ray or Ritwick Ghatak! Other regional language films including Hindi, Telegu, Tamil, Malayam etc are much better preserved.
