MP demands Rs.5 lakh compensation for stampede victims

New Delhi, March 4 (IANS) Congress MP Rajkumari Ratna Singh Thursday asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to provide Rs.5 lakh compensation for the kin of those killed in a stampede in an ashram near Kunda town in her constituency Pratapgarh.

The MP, who raised the matter in the Lok Sabha Thursday evening, also sought the central government’s assistance for those injured.

She later said she would also write to the prime minister listing her demands.

Sixty-three people were killed and more than 30 injured in the stampede that broke out when thousands gathered at an Uttar Pradesh ashram for a death anniversary ceremony.

The incident occurred at the entry gate of Kripaluji Maharaj’s ashram near Kunda town, about 180 km from the state capital Lucknow.
