March 3, 2011 (Calcutta Tube / IBNS): CERN is one of the pioneering European organisations, doing numerous works in the filed of nuclear research in Geneva, Switzerland. IBNS correspondent Supriyo Hazra caught up with Dr. Rudiger Voss, senior physicist, Physical Department, CERN, in a rapid fire session during his recent visit in Kolkata to attend the ‘FRONTIERS OF SCIENCE’ conference.
Excerpts from the interview:
How does CERN perceive India as far as the scientific development is concerned?
We see it from the angle of science, average fundamental research, particle physics. What we clearly observe about India is the fact that there is enormous potentiality in this country. We have observed that the scientific community in this country has very good amount of interest towards the subject. Investment is very much associated with the scientific development of any country and I feel that support and investments by the government will enhance the scientific developments of this nation in future.
Has CERN received the desired result that they were expecting from the Large Haldron Collider (the world’s largest and highest-energy particle accelerator)?
To speak about it, I must say that last year has been a commissioning phase, we are still at the beginning zone. No spectacular thing has been discovered yet, but we hope that within two years we will see an increased intensity of the machine, and hopefully we will see more positive discoveries.
What role is CERN playing in the field medical science?
We are not interested heavily in medical appliances. We make available basic technology and then transfer these technologies in to the implementation in practical life.
What are the upcoming projects of CERN?
We are thinking about successful projects but at the same time it is too premature to mention or make complete planning. We have to wait and see how the science and development moves and then plan more projects in future.
How CERN is planning to work with India in future?
We have plans of adding more Indian scientists in future projects of CERN in future.
