Mohun Bagan fly past Air India 2-0

Kolkata, May 2 (IBNS): A brace from Muritala Ali helped Mohun Bagan flay past a hapless Air India 2-0 in an I-League match played at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Sunday.

The win takes Bagan to 30 points from 23 matches while Air India languish in the relegation zone with 21 points from 24.

Though Bagan enjoyed better territorial domination in the first half, it was Air India who had the better of chances in the first half. Not once, but twice.

Quite against the run of play, Manjit Singh failed to tap in Okorogor Praise’s cross, perhaps the easiest chance of the day. And then, Praise failed to put it past the onrushing Bagan goalkeeper Shilton Paul.

Bagan regained their composure in the second half and eventually surged into the lead in the 66th minute. A solo effort from striker Chidi Edeh caught the rival defence on the wrong foot and an ice-cool Mutitala Ali slotted it home.

In the 78th minute, another Chidi-Muritala combination led to the second goal. Chidi initiated the move from the left and Muritala finished it off to seal the match; an effort which earned him the Man-of-the-match.

A relieved Mohun Bagan Technical Director Subhash Bhowmick complimented his boys after the win. “Poor finishing robbed us of a win in many a match. But today we converted and earned three valuable points. The boys deserve all the praise,” he said.
