Kolkata, Nov 13, 2010 (Calcutta Tube/IBNS) Champions Mohun Bagan demolished West Bengal Police 4-0 at their home ground to maintain their winning run, eight in a row, at Sahara Calcutta Football League (CFL) for premier division here on Tuesday.
Nigerian Edeh Chidi, leading the mariners, hit home in the 21 minute capitalising a cross from Subair Muritala Ali, who also scored from a penalty kick towards the fag end of the first session.
The penalty was awarded to Mohun Bagan when Muritala Ali was dragged down by police defender Dipankar Bhattacharjee in the box.
Muritala’s goal was his 14th in the CFL and held the top position among the scorers and Chidi was in the second place with twelve goals.
Bagan’s tally increased in the second half from a rasping right footer from Souvik Chakraborty in the 69th minute, his second goal of this edition. He was later adjudged man of the match.
The fourth goal came from substitute left winger Snehasish Chakroborty. He netted a pass from Dhanrajan via left-foot in the 82nd minute.
The supremacy of Bagan was proved after their 3-0 win over arch rivals Mohammedan Sporting at Yuba Bharati Krirangan in the previous game.
Tuesday’s victory put the green-and-maroon very close to leaders East Bengal with 31 points from 12 games, 2 points behind the red-and-gold, who have one game in hand.
Behind Mohun Bagan is Aryan Club, who have 28 points from 12 encounters after Sunday’s 1-0 win over Mohammedan Sporting, who have 19 points from ten games and placed 5th, a step behind BNR’s 20 points from 11 games.
Winners of Durand Cup Chirag United are placed sixth with 17 points from nine games.
Without their Brazilian playmaker Jose Ramirez Barreto, the combination of two Africans, Muritala Ali and Edeh Chidi, has been very effective for the mariners as they scripted eight consecutive win after dismal outing in the opening games of the season.
