Kolkata, Nov12 (IANS) FIFA International Order of Merit holder Sheffield United was defeated 0-1 by Asia’s oldest football club Mohun Bagan in the Platinum Jubilee Cup tournament at the Yuvabharati Krirangan here Friday.
The Platinum Jubilee Cup tournament is hosted by Mohammedan Sporting Club to commemorate the 75th anniversary of their winning the Calcutta League defeating Dalhousie Athletic Club in 1934.
The first half of the game saw both teams remain goalless although Sheffield United were more on the aggressive side while Mohun Bagan braved a strong defense with their goalkeeper Sangram Mukherjee, who was declared the Man of the Match, setting an example for the team.
The second half also remained goalless even after Sheffield United got a chance to score through a penalty but it was saved by Sangram’s gallant effort. The game remained goalless in the stipulated 90 minutes period.
Ashim Biswas the lone scorer of the game and sent the ball into the Sheffield net in injury time with just a couple of minutes left. Sheffield soon got a chance for equalising which was again thwarted by Sangram, leading his team to victory.
