Kolkata, Feb 24 (Calcutta Tube / IBNS): A fierce Mizoram defeated defending champions Jharkhand by 2-1 margin to lift the Mir Iqbal Hussain Trophy here at Mohun Bagan Club Ground on Thursday.
The first half of the 33rd Sub-Junior National Finals witnessed attacking football from both the teams.
However, it was Mizoram who drew the first blood, with Ramengmawia netting the first goal of the match.
With one goal down Jharkhand increased their man power in the opponent’s penalty box amd soon Jharkhand equalized with Syeb Shoaib Ahmed scoring within couple of minutes after conceding the goal.
Both teams went in to the lemon break with 1-1 score sheet.
In the second half, both teams started in a positive note in search of the winner.
When the match was in the midway of the second half, David Lalhruaitluanga of Mizoram scored the much awaited winner and ensured the trophy.
Ramengmawia of Mizoram was given the man of the match award.
Orissa football team got the fair play trophy of the tournament.
Veteran footballer P K Banerjee was present at the ground to see the match.
Present Indian players like Baichung Bhutia and Syed Rahim Nabi were also present to encourage the young bloods of Indian Football.
Kushal Das, General Secretary of the All India Football Federation gave away the trophies to both the teams.
On behalf of the title sponsor, Atul Singh, President and CEO, Coca Cola India and South West Asia was present.
“The initiative has received tremendous response from all quarters, and it is very exciting to see such young upcoming talent in our country. The thought is to promote football at the grass root level in India and also to make sports a way of life in the country”, said Atul.
