Mexico cold wave toll rises to 20

Mexico City, Jan 24 (IANS/EFE) The toll in a severe cold sweeping across Mexico has risen to 20 after 12 more people were killed in northern Chihuahua state, a health official said Sunday.

Forty-five percent of the deaths were due to hypothermia, while the rest were due to carbon monoxide poisoning, health secretary Jose Angel Cordova said in a press conference.

‘These are situations that make us reflect because in many cases people do not have a way to warm themselves and burn firewood inside their homes,’ he said.

Mexico has been gripped by severe cold in recent days with temperatures plunging to less than five degrees Centigrade.
