The sub compact minivan was targeted for the pot holed Indian roads. The manufacturer Maruti Suzuki an Indian automaker gained a lot of popularity after its launch. Launched in 1984 it is second in the line of vehicles launched by Maruti in India. It was introduced as a 5 seater vehicle with 796cc engine. The eight seater version was released much later. The design is targeted towards small group going on long trips.
The popularity of Maruti Omni is attributed to its reasonable price and brilliant performance. It is rated as the largest selling vehicle in India. The safety features is one of the reasons for its popularity, the other being multi utility. Maruti Omni is a very safe and secure car. The safety features are the side impact door beams; booster assisted disc brakes, laminated glass windshield, thermoplastic bumpers, and secured seat belts. It has other liked features like narrow lane driving, small space parking and keen turning ability.
The shape is not aerodynamic and it is heavier than the car. This makes the car a little unstable especially during very high winds the vehicle becomes shaky and unstable. There is an inclination to bounce and pitch on an uneven terrain.
The quality of ride in the car due leaf spring lineage is very poor. The maneuverability of the car is quite high, even higher than the Maruti. Presently Omni is available in several variants namely Five Seater- BS III, Cargo BS- III, Eight-Seater – BS III, Cargo LPG-BS III, LPG BS III.. It is available in a number of wonderful colors like superior white, wine red, Caribbean and icy blue, silky silver. There are two versions namely the cargo version and family version. Cargo version has no back seats.
Even after two decades of its launch the Maruti Omni remains popular among the Indian Car lovers without any change in its mechanical aspects. It is suited for both city drive and for long tours. The dual usage a both cargo vehicle and passenger vehicle makes it a good vehicle.
