Man gets 10-year jail for wife’s dowry death

Chandigarh, July 14 (Calcutta Tube) A court here Wednesday awarded 10 year’s rigorous imprisonment to a man convicted for harassing his wife for dowry, prompting her to commit suicide.

The verdict was announced by Additional District and Sessions Judge Lalit Batra.

Yadwinder Singh, a resident of village Maloya here, was held guilty for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and for subjecting his wife Jagdeep Kaur to harassment that drove her to commit suicide.

‘Yadwinder and Jagdeep had solemnised their marriage in November 2008 and the latter had committed suicide, by hanging herself from a ceiling fan, in July 2009. This was the second marriage for both of them,’ said a police official.

‘On the basis of the complaint of deceased’s brother Amandeep Singh, we had arrested Yadwinder. Sister-in-law of Jagdeep was also booked in this case but her case is pending before another court as she is a minor,’ he said.

Earlier Yadwinder’s father, mother and brother were also booked, under various sections, in this case but later they were absolved by the court.
