Kolkata, Feb 20 (Calcutta Tube / IBNS) Railway Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee on Sunday gave a clarion call to build a new Bengal from the scratch as she launched her election campaign informally from a rally in the city, announcing to fight the polls in alliance with Congress and SUCI parties.
A large gathering was witnessed at the rally where Banerjee urged the Left thinking people to join her and shun the brand of Left politics pursued by the ruling Left Front and its chief constituent Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M).
“Let us build a new Bengal. Let us prove again what Bengal things today, India thinks tomorrow,” she shouted using the popular age-old adage patronizing the Bengalis.
She also advocated an alliance with the Congress to fight the elections.
She said the Trinamool Congress is already in alliance with the SUCI (Socialist Unity Centre of India, a non-Left Front left party) and Congress.
“We want to carry forward our alliance with the Congress and SUCI,” Banerjee said though TMC and Congress fought the municipal polls separately last year.
She urged the Congress to fight the polls with Trinamool Congress, which is almost a foregone conclusion but with Mamata spelling out the name herself despite often blowing cold on the Congress, which it supports at the Centre, the remarks assume significance.
She also wooed the minority pledging to implement the recommendations of the Sachar Committee report.
She said Egypt brought change after 35 years, so Bengal can bring a change after 35 years.
