Mahuaa Khobor: TV channel to broadcast 37 I-League matches

Mumbai/Kolkata, Feb 4 (Calcutta Tube / IBNS) IMG-Reliance, the joint venture between IMG Worldwide and Reliance Industries, has awarded Mahuaa Khobor, a Bengali channel launched by Mahuaa Media Pvt Ltd. (MMPL), the exclusive rights among regional channels in West Bengal, to broadcast I-League matches, for the 2010-11 season.

Mahuaa Khobor will telecast the remaining 37 home-and-away matches, featuring the 3 Bengal teams participating in the I-League.

The home and away matches of the 3 Bengal teams, McDowell Mohun Bagan, Kingfisher East Bengal and Chirag United SC, will be exclusively broadcast live by Mahuaa Khobor in West Bengal.

IMG Reliance, in December 2010, acquired all the commercial rights to football in India, from The All India Football Federation (AIFF), the governing body for football/soccer in India.

During the 15-year term of the agreement, IMG Reliance, in cooperation with the AIFF, aims to improve, popularize and promote the game of football throughout India, from the grassroots to the professional level.

“Football is an extremely important sport in West Bengal and it is very good news that the many fans in the region will now be able to see their favourite teams and players through the transmissions of Mahuaa,” an IMG Reliance spokesman said.

“IMG Reliance has moved very quickly since finalising its contract with AIFF so as to make sure that football fans in Bengal would have the matches on their television screens once again, As Mahuaa has committed to produce and broadcast all matches, both home and away, the football fans in the region will not miss a ball kicked,” said the spokesman.

Yubaraj Bhattacharya, CEO Regional Channels, MMPL, said: “We are happy to partner AIFF and IMG Reliance in promoting football in Bengal and beyond. I-League is the biggest football property in India and MMPL is proud to present it to the Bengali audiences. This is the first time that the away matches of the Kolkata football clubs will be telecast live in Bengal.”

Praful Patel, president, AIFF said: “We are very pleased that the I-League will be telecast live commencing with the Kolkata Derby. We are confident that the new partnership with IMG RIL will go a long way in taking Indian football to the next level.”
