by: Shoma A. Chatterji
Love Circus – Premer Challenge is the maiden production venture of producer Bijoy Das of Bijyata Films. Directed by Dulal Bhowmick, it boasts of a mixed medley of actors who form the cast. Among these are Arun Bandopadhyay, Ramen Roy Chowdhury, Koushik Banerjee, Laboni Sarkar, Rudraneel Ghosh, Rahul, Priyanka and newcomer Priyam.
“I liked the story when Dulal-da narrated it to me and decided to produce it at once. But getting the acting cast together for such a challenging story was really difficult because most of the actors, mainly Rudraneel, Rahul and Priyanka did not have dates. But we were determined to go ahead and persuaded them to adjust their dates and join the team. They did, thanks to Dulal-da’s determined spirit,” said producer Das. He was speaking to the Press at the music launch of the film at a city hotel. The lead actors were present and contributed their personal experience of having worked in Love Circus – Premer Challenge.
“The story is basically about how strong and powerful the bond of friendship is and how it can transcend man-made barriers of cast, financial status and above all, communal beliefs. We have tried to establish this message without any sloganeering and have tried to do it in an under-stated way,” said Dulal Bhowmick. Ashok Bhadra has composed the music for the song tracks. Debasis Roy had handled the camera and Swapan Guha has edited the film.
The story, written and scripted by Bhowmick, is about the strong bond of friendship between Subhodip Roy, the poor son of a widowed mother and Salim, who is a taxi driver who drives day and night to take care of the education of his friend. In college, when Subhadeep shines in class, Roma, the spoilt daughter of the local D.I.G. feels jealous and insults him in public. Subhadip insults her. The antagonism rises when Subhadip is called to stand in for Rocky, who Roma is in love with, as hero in the college play. Shubhadip bags the best actor prize. She concocts a false accusation against Shubhadip and gets him thrown out of college. Subhadip’s mother, who had nurtured dreams of getting a bride like Roma for her son, dies of shock. But Salim had promised the lady that he would bring Roma to become Shubodip’s wife. After some strange twists and turns, the film closes on a note where Roma, realizing that it is Shubhodip who loves her and not Rocky. When Roma’s D.I.G. father rushes to bring his daughter home, Salim sacrifices his life to see his friend united to the girl he loves.
Love Circus – Premer Challenge is scheduled for release on February 19. The “circus” element has been kept a mystery by the makers of the film because it carries a lot of suspense.
