Why did you select to direct this particular play?
Our company is interested in doing good plays that has good scripts. This play is not very old. The script is good. It can be placed anywhere as it is about a family. It is not a political play, it is a play about relationships. It is a subject with which any one can relate himself. At the same time it is very much moving, funny, and tragic as well. Infact, it is rare to get all these combinations together.
The play has been well received in all the cities so far, but in which city do you feel the response was biggest?
We have dove 12 shows so far, and we have got 12 standing ovations.Audience surely liked it. I must say we have got very good response.
Do you prefer films or theatre?
I am basically from theatre. It has been a long journey. I am passionate about theatre. The kind of subject you can do with theatre is excellent. Here we can experiment with strong subjects. In case of films it is often not possible as it has to touch the largest audience and even the last man. Secondly, as an actor the range of theatre is more than films. Here we can play all kind of roles. And yes you can connect with the audience very well in case of theaters. However, I have acted with excellent actors in the world of cinema. I have enjoyed doing cinema as well. However, I can say that I will have to do theatre always.
Tell us something about your upcoming film project?
I acted in a big project named ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’. It was a great experience. I loved working with director John Madden. He had directed the film ‘Shakespeare in Love’. I worked with great actors in this movie.
Speaking about the play again, what is your expectations from Kolkata?
Kolkata is a city which is full of culture. I have come here with my plays for several years and I have got good response from the city. Culture is a part of Bengal. Culture goes like mustard fish curry and rice. I am confident that I will get good response from the city.
