Director Toby Ross brings us Like a Moth to a Flame, his latest erotically charged thriller. Composed of three short films. In Our Darkest Moments mixes wry humor and tense drama as it chronicles the sleazy exploits of a hunky closeted married man who cruises seedy bookstores and sex dens. He begins an affair with a dangerous teenager, unaware of the disastrous effects it will have on his life. In the Dark, Softly, directed by Joe Rubin and shot on 16mm film, has the visual ambiance of an art-house film crossed with the grittiness of exploitation cinema and is a love story of sorts, chronicling a young man's obsession with a local serial killer. And in the final film, In Deep, the police are trying to catch a murderer who preys on lonely men and then offs them with his extraordinarily large appendage. Maybe this killer is more than he seems....

"Like a Moth to a Flame"
Three Erotic Pieces

I sat down to watch Toby Ross's new film "Like A Moth to a Flame" and I found it to be intensely erotic. It is composed of three short films that deal with gay sexuality in a new way and Ross gives us the grittiness that is sometimes associated with the gay lifestyle but it is seldom seen on the screen.
The first of the three, "In Our Darkest Moments" could have been very, very depressing had it not had a sensitivity and wry humor. All of us know someone like the hero--a good looking, well-hung married male who chooses to find sex in the seediest of places--adult book stores and dens where sex is freely available. I found myself rooting for his wife at one point when I saw the depths to which he had fallen but I also accepted that he had to be who he was and it was not pretty. His affair with a young and dangerous teen will have disastrous results for him and his life and our married man seems either unaware of them or just doesn't care.
Joe Rubin directed the second short, "In The dark Softly" and it is quite gritty. A serial killer has been visiting a local cruising spot and doing away with gay men by strangling them with a rosary. Here we have a young man who is involved with a female but is mesmerized by the murderer and looks for him.
The third film, "In Deep" is perhaps the most intense of the three. In it the police are not having much luck catching a murderer who targets lonely men. First he uses them and then disposes of them with his own personal weapon of destruction. It will keep you guessing for a while.
The musical score is haunting and totally adds to the films. Ross is always fortunate in finding just the right people to play his roles. Another thing that I like about Toby Ross's films is that dialog is not always necessary. The actions of his characters seem to say everything and words tend to take away from the overall effect. Ross gives a look at a world that many of us have never seen and that few of us will ever want to and he does so in a way that keeps the viewer glued to his seat.
Enjoyable

Before I get pummeled with random produce, I'll get it out of the way and say that yes, I am in the movie. I play the killer in the segment "In Deep." I had a good time working with Toby Ross and think the movie, as a whole, came out as he had intended being well-geared for his audience and a very enjoyable watch for those that may be new to his work. Each segment has its own unique tone and gauges the mind for different reasons. Ross has been working in the business for a long time and this title shows why he is very good at what he does.

Reviewer: Brad Paulson,
This is my second Toby Ross movie and it's essentially 3 shorts. Two of them involve serial killers and one of them is pretty much your basic relationship drama. The stories are not the most amazing things on earth, but are well done and interesting. As a normal guy who happens to be attracted to other guys, it's nice to see a movie that features good looking men who look and act like real men, have girlfriends or wives, etc. but still hook up with other guys. The movie kinda reminded me of Joe Gage's films from the 70s and 80s. Real men with real lives, instead of the typical gay stereotypes which tend to populate these movies. But it's also somewhat played for laughs, especially in the third segment. The director is to be credited for pushing the envelope, not in terms of content, but attitude.

Boring, stupid and a waste of money. Do not be fooled by the trailer, this collection of three stories is neither erotic or suspenseful. They are just stupid. The first story would have been much more interesting if the people involved could actually act. The second and third stories are just junk, with even worse acting. Don't spend your money on this this.
