Kolkata walks for the elderly

Kolkata, Feb 11 (Calcutta Tube / IBNS): NSHM Institute of Media & Communication (NIMC), in association with Public Relations Society of India (PRSI) Kolkata Chapter, on Saturday organized a ‘WALK For The Elderly’, where people from various spheres of life participated to spread awareness about the problems faced by the elderly people here.

The walk was flagged off by Maj Gen K S Kumbar, VSM, GOC, Eastern Command Bengal Area. The participants walked from  Kolkata’s iconic Victoria Memorial to the Gandhi Statue in Chowringhee at the heart of the city.

Over 4000 Kolkatans from different walks life participated in the event.

They took a pledge to fight against elderly abuse.

This aim of the WALK was to spread awareness about the problems faced by the elderly people and demand dignity, healthcare and social security for the senior citizens and also to sensitize the young generation about the sufferings of the elderly and encourage them to find solutions.

NSHM Chief Mentor Cecil Antony said, “As part of our social responsibility we should spread awareness about value education wherein students are taught to respect and support the elderly. I think this WALK would go a long way to spread such awareness.”

Soumyajit Mahapatra, Secretary, PRSI said, “This WALK will showcase the feelings of Kolkata’s Generation Y in Kolkata. Hope this initiative will be replicated in other cities in India. The Public Relations Society of India is happy to be associated
with this effort.”
