Kolkata remembers Helen Keller, Mayor promises aid for disabled

Kolkata, June 27 (Calcutta Tube / IBNS): Kolkata Municipal Corporation mayor Sovan Chattopadhyay promised financial aid to all the disabled on Monday.

The mayor while speaking to the audience at a function to celebrate the 131st birth anniversary of the American author, political activist and disability icon Helen Keller, said, “Disabled people will get 400 rupees stipend per month.”
The celebration was organised for the blind children jointly by the National Association for the Blind (NAB) and Amway Opportunity Foundation.
The mayor who is scheduled to formally join the NAB in near future, said that if proper platform is provided to the disabled people then they can break every barrier and carve a bright future for themselves by exhibiting their talents.
He said, “If disabled persons are helped then they can go as far or even further than normal people.”
Several competitions were held where both the normal and visually challenged students competed on equal footing.
The mayor felicitated the participants and promised his support for the cause of the visually challenged students.
He said, “We will help the people by standing beside them.”
“The Corporation understands its duty towards the blind persons,” he added.
