Kolkata, December 5, 2010 (Calcutta Tube/IBNS): Kolkata was a bit different for the 15 new born babies and their mothers as they became a part of the Thanksgiving Ceremony at the Bengal Infertility and Reproductive Therapy Hospital (BIRTH).
The ceremony was a part of a medical record by Dr. Gautam Khastgir, Medical Director, BIRTH, as he successfully carried out 12 Caesarean delivery cases which included 3 mothers with twin babies on Oct 10, 2010.
The date ‘10.10.2010’ will surely remain a memorable one for both Khastgir and mothers.
“Infertility is a significant problem and has considerable impact on the lives of couples, especially in social and cultural context,” Khastgir said.
“Couples with infertility began to see new hopes with the advent of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). This technique is also known as ‘Test Tube Baby’ as life is created outside body with the union of sperm and egg in the laboratory and then transferred in the womb to grow until delivery,” he added.
The delivery of 12 Caesareans in a single day is a unique incident in itself and the first of its kind as no other centres in India has ever reported such high numbers of delivery by a single doctor in a day, medial facility informed.
“Definitely an important day in my life I am feeling great,” Priyanka Roy, who was a part of the 12 Caesarean cases performed on the day.
“I am very happy today, never expected all these things will happen,” Pooja Das, another mother, who gave birth to her child on that day, said.
