Kolkata, May 10 (Calcutta Tube / IBNS): Kolkata-based Mercy Hospital observed World Thalassaemia Day on Saturday with an aim of creating awareness about the disease.
Leading actors of popular Bengali serial ‘Gaaner Opaarey’ were present at the edvent to support the cause.
“Simply explained, Thalassaemia is a genetically transmitted disorder of blood, which causes anaemia.It is common in this part of the worlds and most children in with Thalassaemia need a transfusion of red blood cells once or twice a month,” said Sanjay Prasad, CEO of Mercy Hospital.
“There is so much that one can do to reach out, and we feel privileged that we can help so many children with their transfusion and treatment.”
Speaking about the event, he said: “We hold this annual programme to brighten up put patients faces, and top bring some joy into their otherwise humdrum lives. Even a little effort goes a long way in making these young children smile.”
Television actors Gaurav, Arjun, Mimi and Anindita, who attended the event on Saturday afternoon, said that they are ready to support the cause as awareness about the disease needs to be increased in the society.
“I have never attended this kind of event before. I really feel that we should give more and more support to these kinds of programmes,” said Gaurav.
“The fight against this deadly diseases is on and our support is there. If we can bring smile to the faces of these children, then it will be great. We are blessed to be a part of this event,” he said.
The World Thalassaemia Day is observed on May 8.
