Kolkata, Sep 6 (Calcutta Tube/IBNS): City girl Amrita Das recently became the eighth swimmer from Bengal to have crossed the English Channel, reports said on Monday.
The twenty two-year-old girl from north Kolkata on Friday took about 13 hours 42 minutes to cross the 42 km turbulent Channel, an arm of Atlantic Ocean, her coach and mentor Masadur Rahman said.
Rahman, who himself swam across the English Channel in 1997, said Das started from Shakespeare Bay in Dover, England and emerged on French shores within fourteen hours.
He said, the girl, who recently Graduated from college, had to wait almost eight days in Dover as the channel was rough and turbulent due to cold waves from the North Sea.
Amrita Das had stated from Dover at 6:19 am and finished at 8:01 pm on Friday.
Mihir Sen from Bengal was the first Asian to have crossed English Channel in 1957 and Rashmi Sharma was the seventh from the state who successfully waded through the icy waters in 2009.
