Kolkata, July 27 (Calcutta Tube / IBNS) The yearlong celebration to mark the 150th anniversary of the Indian Income Tax (IT) department concluded on Monday in Kolkata with a cultural function that was glammed up by the presence of filmmaker Aparna Sen.
Besides Aparna Sen, Tollywood actors Ranjit Mallick and Sabyasachi Chakraborty were present as the audience was treated to some memorable performances.
Singers Anup Jalota, Swagata Lakshmi Dasgupta and Raghav Chattopadhyay also regaled the audience.
“We are all afraid of the Income Tax Department, so events like these go a long way to remove that fear from the minds of the people and bring us closer,” said Aparna Sen.
“I hope that the relation between the tax payers and the tax department becomes much better,” she added.
Kolkata IT Chief Commissioner BS Sondhi stated that it was “a historic moment” which marked the metamorphosis of tax collectors from just law enforcers to efficient public service providers.
“Modern tax collectors are not mere law enforcers and we want to provide top class service to the people,” he remarked.
He stressed that the IT department was the primary source of revenue for the government and hence it had a major contribution to India’s staggering growth.
He said, “We have been transformed into a citizen centric and technologically backed institution which only wants to aid the citizens of India.”
“Achievements of the Income Tax department have been commendable throughout the years,” he added.
