Karunanidhi orders flying squads to detect power thefts

Chennai, Oct 7 (Calcutta Tube) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi Tuesday ordered setting up of flying squads to detect power thefts in the electricity-starved state.

At a review meeting of the state energy department, the chief minister also ordered fast replacement of incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) in government offices to save power.

He also asked officials to ensure that energy efficient pump sets are distributed to small and marginal farmers free of cost at the earliest.

In order to maintain the current power supply, the state will be purchasing 600 MW of power from the open market.
