Margao/Kolkata/ Mumbai, Jan 31 (Calcutta Tube / IBNS) After back to back losses, Dempo bounced back strongly drubbing HAL 3-0 on Sunday in the I-League match.
Nigerian Ranty Martins opened the account for Dempo as early as 7th minute of the match. Roberto Mendes Silva (Beto) netted the second goal at the 4th minute after changing ends. It was Ranty again in the 67th minute, who scored the final goal of the match.
HAL missed influential players like Xavier Vijay Kumar and RC Prakash due to injury. They started the game with the same formation they played in their last match against East Bengal – 4-5-1, with Nigerian Hamza as the lone striker and captain J Murali supporting from behind.
However, the ploy didn’t work this time. Murali, who has been a decent performer for his team this season, had a dreadful show.
He failed to control the ball several occasions and gave away to the opponents. In fact, this kind of error was something common for the entire team in the first half. Hamza could not do much as he was often left stranded in the upfront without much support.
National player Climax Lawrence played the main role in Dempo’s first goal. He put an accurate pass for Ranty from the right flank, the later picked the ball while entering into HAL defense, taking the entire defense by surprise.
Keeper Pramodh left the goal charging incoming Nigerian, Ranty kept his cool and scooped the ball in front of Pramodh.
In Kolkata Chirag United registered a comprehensive 4-2 win against ONGC.
Joshimar Da Silva Martins, Elijah Junior, Denson Devadas, and Lalkamal Bhowmick scored the goals for Chirag United, while coming as a replacement Badmus Babatunde pumped in two goals for the away team.
Chirag United looked the better side throughout the match with the return of Junior pairing up Josimar Da Silva Martins up front. Junior-Joshimar combination caused panic in ONGC defence time and again.
The first chance was created by Elijah Junior but Joshimar Martins hit straight at goalkeeper, Rajat Ghosh Dastidar.
In Mumbai It was a day of missed chances for Mumbai F C as despite getting scoring chances to overpower their Goan opponents Salgaocar SC, they were unable to stop Karim Bencherifa’s boys as they faced a 0-1 defeat in the round 12 tie of the I-league at the Sahu Maharaj ground on Sunday.
It was a very close call as both sides played well and were trying to get the better of each other. The lady luck was certainly not on Mumbai Football Club side today as they were unable to convert the chances that came their way.
The Mumbai based side missed as many as eight chances which deprived them from three points.
Both the teams preferred the attacking approach but Salgaocar was successful in execution better in comparison to Mumbai FC.
Mumbai FC’s midfielder came close to score in the 23rd and 30th minute in the first half, but weren’t able to find the target. Sampath Kumar Kuttymani, who got a clear chance to put Khalid Jamil-coached side ahead in the 32nd minute, missed the target.
It was up to Salgaocar Sports Club man in-form, Ryuji Sueoka to break the deadlock and the Japanese midfielder made no mistake to put his side in front scoring in the 34th minute after collecting a pass from Yusuf Yakubu from the right flank.
Scoring opportunities continued to come in the hosts way, but they squandered one after another to end up empty handed.
Kuttymani came close to score the equalizer in the 60th minute, but to Mumbai FC’s despair, his shot hit the woodwork. Also Noel Wilson and Rodrigues might be cursing their ill luck as they were unable to score in the second half.
Even Salgaocar had a chance to increase their lead in the second half through Yakubu and Sueoka but they were unable to recreate the first half magic.
With this win Salgaocar are placed second in the points table with 27 points, while Mumbai FC remained on 20 points.
Salgaocar defender Irungbam Khelemba Meitei was adjudged the Man of the Match for his clinical performance in the defence.
