New Delhi, Oct 7 (Calcutta Tube) Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Dinesh Trivedi has sought the agriculture ministry’s support to discourage tobacco farming by finding an alternative crop.
In a letter written to Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, Trivedi said he is trying to find an ‘out of the box’ solution to the problem.
‘It is time the health and agriculture ministries come together and draw up a long- term plan to find an alternative crop to tobacco so as to try and find a solution to this menace in a different way,’ Trivedi said in his letter to Pawar.
‘Keen involvement of different sectors of the government is required so that practical steps can be taken to reduce supply of tobacco and also in turn find an alternate crop for the tobacco farmers,’ he said.
Studies show that consumption of tobacco is likely to kill almost a million people in India in 2010.
